VISIT OF THE CHICOUTIMI’S TRADING POST HERITAGE SITE
HERITAGE | SCIENCE
The historic site of the TRADING POST OF CHICOUTIMI appears as a wooded island in the densely urbanized area of downtown Chicoutimi. New trails have been developed to visit one of the most important archaeological sites in Quebec. Particularly active during the fur trade and the industrial development eras of Chicoutimi, the site has been a place of gathering of various Native communities ever since the prehistoric times.
In recent years, the spot of the former TRADING POST OF CHICOUTIMI is an important archaeological excavations site carried out each summer. Occupied 5000 years ago, The place, a true heritage gem right in the heart of Saguenay’s downtown, is considered the founding site of Chicoutimi. In a partnership between the Pulperie Regional Museum, the University of Quebec at Chicoutimi (UQAC) and the City of Saguenay, the research, development and diffusion of the project are made possible. Excavations are done since 2013, in front of the visitors. The result of the seasonal work allows the annual update of information and the exhibition of the artifacts in the permanent exhibition: CHEK8TIMI – UP TO WHERE THE WATER IS DEEP.
